We are currently searching for a Biochemist to support the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This opportunity is a full-time position with Lockheed Martin and is on-site at NIH in Rockville, MD.
The position will involve preparation and characterization of novel protein conjugates for experimental vaccine formulations. Duties will include:
1. Perform a wide variety of procedures and techniques which may include, but are not limited to: chemical modification of proteins, protein chemistry, protein purification, preparative chromatography, buffer preparation, analytical HPLC, polyacrylamide gel electorphoresis.
2. Design and independently perform the necessary calculations to set up and analyze experiments.
3. Calibrate and operate a variety of laboratory instruments used to perform tests, analyses, and other laboratory procedures which may include, but are not limited to: HPLC, spectrophotometers, centrifuges, balances, pH meters, etc.
4. Perform experiments on the modification of recombinant proteins. Requires familiarity with fundamental organic/biological chemistry.
5. Maintain accurate documentation of experiments and write reports including results and description of experimental methods. Requires strong English writing skills.
6. Interpret, evaluate, and discuss the results of each experiment with the supervisor as part of the planning process for subsequent studies, and routinely present these findings in Branch lab meetings;
7. Assist in the analysis and interpretation of data and prepare summaries of laboratory findings to be used in reports and papers to be presented at scientific meetings and/or publication in scientific journals. Actively participate in the preparation of manuscripts, abstracts, and/or posters. May co-author publications or abstracts and present findings at scientific meetings and conferences.
8. Provide training to students and other laboratory personnel in the use of sophisticated laboratory equipment and in the performance of specialized procedures, techniques, etc.
9. Responsible for laboratory upkeep and routine maintenance of equipment. Orders and maintains laboratory supplies, chemicals, and equipment. Required to handle biological materials, carcinogens, recombinant protein materials, acids, biological wastes, etc.
10. Keep accurate records of experiments and results in pen in bound laboratory notebooks.

Qualifications:1. BS with 2-3 years or MS degree with 1-2 years of experience in biochemistry, chemistry or organic chemistry.
2. Familiarity with biochemical techniques and experience working with proteins or other biochemical molecules is required.
3. Experience with analytical techniques such as HPLC, UV spectroscopy, and SDS-PAGE is required.
4. Ability to perform necessary calculations to set up and analyze experiments. These may include serial dilutions, molar concentrations, gram to mole conversions, and concentration determination,
5. Skill in calibrating and operating a variety of laboratory instruments used to perform tests, analyses, and other laboratory procedures.
6. Skill in determining the specific experimental data needed and the best approach and methods to obtain these data. Ability to adapt and modify established approaches and methods to meet experimental objectives. Skill in interpreting and evaluating the significance of experimental data as related to the specific project or assignment.
7. Skill in written communication to prepare summaries, graphs, and other material for internal reports, manuscripts or presentations.
8. Excellent written and communication skills as well as proficiency with MS Office. May be required to perform computer analysis of data and use computer and computer software to prepare data for publication.
9. Highly motivated individual with the ability to handle multiple tasks and projects simultaneously. Must be able to plan and coordinate experiments successfully with other laboratory section and members.
