Job Description

The Research Laboratory Scientist is responsible for designing, undertaking and analyzing information from controlled laboratory-based investigations, experiments, trials and protocols.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Planning and conducting experiments
  • Recording and analyzing data
  • Carrying out fieldwork, eg collecting samples
  • Presenting results to senior/other research staff
  • Writing research papers, reports, reviews and summaries
  • Demonstrating procedures
  • Preparing research proposals and funding applications/bids
  • Supervising junior staff including technicians
  • Organizing product/materials testing
  • Ensuring that quality standards are met
  • Liaising with research and/or production staff
  • Developing original solutions to problems
  • Keeping up to date with relevant scientific and technical developments
  • And, other duties as assigned

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Research Laboratory Scientist will direct staff as needed to carry out duties.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

Candidates should have obtained a master’s degree, however a post-doctoral degree is preferred with a background in clinical research molecular biology and related fields. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in either genetics/genomics, immunology or molecular biology.

Post-doctoral research and/or practical research/laboratory work experience is also beneficial.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

South Carolina Drivers’ License or equivalent. 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents, including scientific literature, research reports and protocols, standard operation procedures (SOPs), and other instructions.  Ability to communicate in writing to all levels of employees, including Directors and Managers.

REASONING ABILITIES:

Must be able to make decisions relative to research protocols and must know when to contact the Head of Research and Development and the Attending Veterinarian.  Must have sufficient skills and abilities to know when there are problems within primate social groups and be able to work with appropriate staff to stabilize groups.  The individual must be able to deal with diverse problems, to propose resolutions, and implement approved resolutions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job, with or without reasonable accommodations.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee must be able to undergo fit testing for a N95 respirator mask.  The employee may be require to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.  Additionally, the employee must be able to distinguish colors.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The AGI work environment characteristics described below are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job, with or without reasonable accommodations.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to inclement weather, including cold, heat with high humidity, and precipitation.  The noise level is usually moderate.  The job requires the ability to direct those catching animals in safe and proper procedures, and to catch small to medium-sized animals without supervision.  Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds may be required.  Work hours are 8 hours per day, five days per week.  There may be overtime hours required as well as weekend and evening work based on animal health and Company needs.
