Position Duties
Prepare laboratories for Biology courses and supervise work study students. Order supplies for laboratories. Train faculty, staff and students on proper waste management procedures and safety protocols and enforce EPA regulations.
Essential Functions
- Perform tasks associated with laboratory preparation (e.g., order supplies, prepare reagents, check equipment, organize supplies, set up and breakdown lab, schedule field trips) correctly and in a timely manner. Prepare and maintain inventories of biological materials (mammalian cell cultures, DNA, bacteria and reagents) for research and instructional labs. Monitor lab progress and be available to assist faculty/students during the lab and provide instructional assistance for instructors as requested. Conduct searches on identified topics to enrich and efficiently run lab classes. Record data and monitor research projects when faculty is on vacation or as needed.
- Enforce EPA regulations and safety protocol for all faculty, staff, student employees and students. Serve as liaison with Loyola's Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) for safety training and keep faculty, staff, student employees, research students and students current on safety regulations and protocols. Maintain all safety equipment (e.g., eye wash stations, chemical showers, biological safety cabinets, chemical fume hoods, chemical clean-up ). Enforce and comply with all USDA and IACUC regulations and conduct periodic compliance inspections.Maintain, calibrate and clean regular lab equipment, computer physiology data acquisition systems (ADInstruments technology equipment) and Motic Imaging technology. Maintain notebook for each teaching lab which includes: ordering log, syllabus, protocol and lab diagram if appropriate. Develop ways to utilize departmental lab spaces more effectively. Maintain and organize animal and plant teaching collections and provide day-to-day management of Cell Culture Facility, Imaging center and research animal facilities. Oversee all mammal facilities and provide 24/7 care for large animals. Respond as needed for alarm and alert system (24/7) for climate control in animal rooms, research labs, instructional labs and preparatory labs and for equipment failure.

- In coordination with laboratory manager, interview and hire prospective students. Provide orientation and training for new workers and advanced technical training for selected students. Assist in preparation of the biology work study employment manual. Assign appropriate lab preparations to each student based student availability and expertise. Supervise work progress and implement changes when necessary.
- Coordinate vendors demonstrations for new equipment purchases (i.e., microscopes). Place orders and keep order log; track deliveries; and check packing slips upon delivery. Drive to local vendors for supplies as necessary. Purchase PPE for labs, research and student employees. Purchase supplies for research students and faculty specific to research.
- Assure compliance with hazardous waste regulations. Provide training on proper handling of chemicals and biological hazards. Maintain chemical inventory SDS on chemicals in use, determining unsafe/expired products. Log, collect and store waste appropriately and inspect waste recovery areas regularly. Coordinate with EHS during chemical waste lab pack.
- Performs all other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Experience in academic laboratory setting and proficiency in laboratory techniques. Knowledge of laboratory equipment. Experience handling chemicals and biological material. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks in a busy laboratory setting. Demonstrated teamwork and leadership abilities, Knowledge of computer software. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to support the mission and values of a Catholic Jesuit education.
