Job Description

To perform specialized and routine standardized chemical and biological laboratory examinations and procedures; perform related work.

Key Responsibilities

This is the entry and full working technician level serving as assistant to professional staff performing complex testing and related analyses. They work independently on laboratory examinations and projects, and they may supervise or provide work direction for laboratory assistants or work-study students.

Please note: This is a limited-service position. The continuation of the appointment is determined by the availability of funds such as grants, alternative funding sources and/or time frames such as pilot projects, alternative funding sources or program termination.

The successful candidate will assist the Laboratory Supervisor by:

  1. Contributing to the on-time delivery of high-quality data and QA reports, while upholding rigorous standards in data and quality assurance processes.

  2. Assisting with the maintenance of all radiation detection instrumentation & other laboratory equipment.

  3. Assisting with technical consulting support for the INL Oversight Program, specifically focusing on environmental sampling.

  4. Mentoring students.

  5. Supporting academic programs.

Minimum Qualifications

Good knowledge of:

  • Laboratory terminology, equipment, materials, and procedures, and the fundamental laboratory methods relating to chemistry or biology.

Experience:

  • Performing standardized laboratory tests according to prescribed procedures.
  • Calculating and recording test results.
  • Maintaining a clean, sterile, and safe laboratory environment.

Supplemental Information

Incumbents in these positions work under the following conditions:

  • Work with toxic, volatile, and corrosive chemicals, carcinogenic substances and potentially pathogenic organisms.
  • Required to stand approximately six hours a day.
  • May be required to have a vaccination for infectious diseases.

ISU minimum for this classification is $16.50/hour.
