Job Title:Sr. Research SpecialistDepartment:Engineering | Center for Automotive Research

As part of the Center for Automotive Research (CAR) in the College of Engineering, the Research Specialist plans, conducts, demonstrates, and documents research projects and activities with federal agencies, industry, functioning as a technical expert in the area of Li-ion battery characterization and modeling, energy storage and electrified transportation; Serve as a technical expert in electrochemical modeling with application to prediction of li-ion battery voltage, heat generation, thermal characterization and degradation mechanisms, including related problems of state and parameter estimation in li-ion cells and packs; leads and conducts research on modeling Li-ion batteries, and integration of such models in different software platforms (Matlab, Star, CCM+, GTAutolion) develops experimental procedures and post-processing methods to calibrate and validate such models; designs experiments for Li-ion battery characterization; designs and implements software to support equipment control, data acquisition and safety monitoring for battery model characterization and validation experiments; designs the mechanical fixtures for battery testing and fabrication of prototypes battery modules and packs; writes, edits, and/or approves progress and technical reports for sponsors; serves as Co-PI on designated projects; plans coordinates meetings with industrial partners; conducts internal and external research meetings. Assists in the preparation of research proposals; serves as liaison with research sponsoring agencies as well as with other research and educational institutes; prepares technical reports for submission to sponsoring agencies; writes journal and conference articles; makes presentations at conferences and symposia; coordinates and supervises graduate students, visiting scholars, and research colleagues in analyzing and documenting their research results and activities and projects. Coordinates and directs the operations of the energy storage laboratory at CAR; provides leadership within the lab; manages laboratory personnel; manages lab business functions, including purchasing, time accounting, and billing; specifies and orders laboratory equipment and materials to support research needs of CAR; establishes and enforces laboratory safety procedures in compliance with OSHA and OSU regulations; supervises and coordinates use of equipment and shop/laboratory facilities; performs and oversees maintenance and upgrading of equipment, instruments, and machines to meet evolving research needs. Develops instructional material and provides training to undergraduate and graduate level students in the area of energy storage testing and analysis techniques, processes, and laboratory safety; pursues new research programs; supports teaching and training in electrified vehicle technologies.

Masters Degree in relevant field or science or Engineering

Experience Required:

6 years of experience in an engineering research capacity is required; ability to translate, adapt and apply academic and/or practical knowledge to the conduct of engineering research; ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously; excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to work dynamically in a diverse team environment.

Desired:

Experience in an academic research capacity; ability to independently meet research goals, solve problems, and develop scientific ideas.

The target hiring range for this job profile is $94,400.00- $124,200.00. The actual salary paid to an individual will vary based on multiple factors, including but not limit to, education, years of experience, internal equity, etc.
