Job Summary\:
Assistant Research Professor\:
The University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus is seeking a full-time Instructor or Assistant Research Professor to join the Division of Medical Oncology in the Department of Medicine. This position will support the Young Women’s Breast Cancer Translational Program and laboratory of Dr Virginia Borges, a physician-scientist whose research focuses on young women’s breast cancer research and identifying the reasons for increased metastasis in breast cancer. This is a unique opportunity to play a significant role in a large, translational cancer research program embedded within a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary academic cancer center.
The primary purpose of this role will be to direct, collaborate, and participate in cutting edge translational research, prepare manuscripts for publication, develop research ideas and lead their development, monitor progress, develop budgets, and manage research staff. This individual will help lead multiple projects identifying mechanisms of increased metastatic potential and therapeutic resistance in breast cancer, including interrogating the tumor microenvironment, identifying circulating and tissue biomarkers, and interactions with the immune system. In addition to advancing high-impact research, the Instructor/Assistant Research Professor will contribute to the scientific leadership and operational development of the laboratory, mentor trainees and staff, and foster a culture of mutual support, collaboration, innovation, and inclusion.
Assistant Research Professor
Key Responsibilities\:
- Lead and manage research projects focused on the mechanisms of metastasis and resistance in breast cancer, focused on young onset cases and human samples.
- Develop and optimize in vitro and in vivo models (cell line and mouse) of metastasis, therapeutic resistance, and perform molecular and biochemical analyses.
- Collaborate with the YWBCTP existing research partners, including other PhD investigators, physician and clinical investigators, computational biologists, and industry partners to integrate laboratory findings with patient data and accelerate clinical translation.
- Mentor and supervise research trainees , including summer students clinical fellows, and technicians, in experimental design, data interpretation, and manuscript/grant preparation. There is also potential for graduate student level mentoring.
- Contribute to scientific writing and communication , including manuscripts, grant applications, conference presentations, and progress reports.
- Support and collaborate with the Borges lab managers to establish and maintain laboratory procedures, safety protocols, and compliance with institutional and federal regulations.
- Support lab infrastructure development , including resource allocation, budgeting, and strategic planning.

Preferred Qualifications\:
- Advanced postgraduate training, such as postdoctoral research, with experience in cancer biology, translational oncology, immunology or a related field.
- History of applying for and obtaining research funding.
- Experience mentoring trainees and managing collaborative research teams.
- Basic bioinformatic experience using R or similar platforms.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities\:
- Expert knowledge of molecular and cellular biology, including techniques such as Western blotting, PCR, immunohistochemistry, cell culture, and animal models of cancer. Knowledge of biomarker development or extracellular vesicle work a plus.
- Ability to analyze and interpret complex data and troubleshoot experiments.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Strong leadership and mentoring abilities.
- Ability to work independently while contributing to a team-oriented lab environment.
- Knowledge of compliance, safety, and regulatory procedures in laboratory research.

The starting salary range ( or hiring range ) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE\:
Research Scientist $74,000-85,000
Senior Research Scientist $83,000-93,000
Assistant Research Professor $90,000-100,000
The above salary range ( or hiring range ) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.
