The Swine Applied Innovations Lab at Iowa State University is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Research Scientist I with expertise in swine nutrition, swine biomedical models, and translational research. The ideal candidate will support ongoing research into swine nutrition, management, and physiology using state-of-the-art methods and technologies. This is a hands-on research position focused on executing and managing research studies to bridge the gap between science and applications.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design, execute, and manage swine studies in areas such as nutrition, management, and physiology, under research and field settings.

  • Conduct comprehensive phenotyping of pigs, including gait analysis, respiratory assessments, metabolic profiling, and behavioral characterization.

  • Perform technical procedures such as blood collection, tissue sampling, necropsy, and intramuscular or intravenous injections.

  • Perform wet lab assays, including but not limited to proximate analysis, qPCR, ELISA, and histological evaluation.

  • Analyze research data using diverse statistical software tools (e.g. SAS and R).

  • Prepare datasets for peer-reviewed publication and grant submission.

  • Supervise, train, and mentor undergraduate and graduate students in GLP-compliant laboratory and animal care techniques.

  • Maintain detailed protocols and coordinate approvals with IACUC, IRB, and IBC; develop and implement new SOPs to ensure compliance and safety.

  • Maintain laboratory infrastructure, manage supply chains, and coordinate hazardous material handling with Environmental Health and Safety (EHS).

  • Collaborate with academic researchers, industry partners, and interdisciplinary teams to support innovation in swine nutrition, management, and welfare.

  • Contribute to grant writing and external funding proposals.

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an on-going basis without sponsorship.

This is a term position with opportunity for renewal.
