Description:

The Gladstone Institutes is a leading independent, not-for-profit research organization dedicated to improving human health through groundbreaking biomedical research and education. Our work spans neuroscience, cardiovascular biology, immunology, and stem cell biology, with a strong emphasis on understanding and treating disease. With approximately 600 team members, including world-renowned scientists and biomedical leaders, Gladstone fosters a collaborative and innovative environment. Located at the Mission Bay Campus in a state-of-the-art facility, we offer competitive salaries, comprehensive benefits, and the resources to empower individuals to maximize their potential and make a meaningful impact on global health.

About the role:

We are recruiting a Research Associate (RA) to assist with ongoing multidisciplinary cellular genome engineering projects. Our lab has pioneered the application of novel genetic engineering technologies such as CRISPR to primary human immune cells (Shifrut et al., Cell 2018). These new technical abilities have furthered our lab's research into the genetic underpinnings of T cell biology (Schmidt and Steinhart et al., Science 2022; Schmidt and Ward et al., Nature 2023) and opened the door to novel cancer immune-therapies based on engineered human immune cells (Roth et al., Nature 2018).

We are hiring for an RA position focused on decoding T cell recognition in autoimmune, oncology, and infectious disease settings. You will learn and gain experience with cutting edge synthetic biology techniques, next-generation and single-cell sequencing technologies, and be exposed to a wide array of disease contexts. This position is an excellent opportunity to be at the frontier of synthetic immunology and next generation genomic technologies.

What you will do:

Support platform technology development, consisting of cloning, cell culture (primary human cells as well as cell lines), flow cytometry, and genomic sequencing. There will also be opportunities to assist with computational analysis of generated data.

We are looking for someone with a strong sense of ownership and accountability. This is a dynamic environment and requires exceptional organizational and communication skills. In particular, we care about someone who consistently follows through and is a proactive problem-solver.

What you will need:

  • BA/BS degree and two or more years of laboratory experience utilizing techniques or methods required by the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience with general laboratory techniques, especially basic molecular and cellular biology techniques (including but not limited to DNA and RNA isolation, PCR, gel electrophoresis, cloning, bacterial transformation, mammalian cell culture, etc.)
  • Strong sense of ownership and accountability; consistent follow through. Proactive problem-solver with a bias towards action
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills. Able to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
  • Comfortable operating in a fast-paced dynamic environment

What is preferred:

  • Prior experience with culturing human T cells
  • Prior experience with flow cytometry
  • Prior experience with next-generation sequencing
  • Familiarity with standard molecular biology and immunology techniques

Required Application Materials:

  • Resume/CV
  • Transcript
  • Cover letter with a brief statement of research background and future goals / interest in the lab
  • Contact information for two references

Hiring Range:

$27-$31/hr.
