Laboratory Assistant/Technician

Job Description

The position is responsible for preparing patient samples for testing and determining the acceptability of specimens and results. The role involves performing a variety of manual, semi-automated, and automated biochemical, hematological, microbiological, and blood bank analysis on varied patient specimens, maintaining a high degree of accuracy, reliability, and productivity.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare patient samples for testing and determine acceptability of specimens and results.
  • Repeat specimen testing as necessary to ensure accuracy.
  • Perform Hematology, Chemistry, and Urinalysis testing.
  • Perform laboratory tests and procedures using techniques such as ELISA, RNA extraction, and flow cytometry.
  • Maintain, calibrate, operate, and troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation to ensure proper functionality.
  • Accurately prepare, label, and store reagents, standards, controls, and specimens for analysis.
  • Report accurate and timely test results to deliver quality patient care.
  • Participate in quality assurance and quality improvement activities.
  • Identify and replenish testing bench supplies as necessary.
  • Recognize normal, abnormal, unusual, and critical results and take appropriate action as established by laboratory policy.
  • Verify accuracy of results and initiate corrective action when indicated.
Essential Skills
  • Experience working in a hospital or clinical laboratory is required.
  • Ability to operate and maintain laboratory instruments.
  • Experience or proficiency within hematology, clinical chemistry, coagulation, urinalysis, and microscopy is required.
  • Proficiency in blood bank operations is highly preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Proficient with computers; familiarity with laboratory information systems is a plus.
  • High level of attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Coachable and capable of taking and initiating feedback well.
  • Proven history of reliability and positive attendance.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience gained through externship is acceptable.
  • ASCP certification is advantageous.
  • Medical laboratory qualifications are beneficial.
Work Environment

The role is based in a large hospital lab, serving as the central lab for all inpatient patient samples for the hospital. The environment is fast-paced and high-throughput. The schedule is Monday to Friday, 1:00 PM to 9:30 AM, with rotating weekends. The position is initially contracted for three months, with a possibility of extension. The onboarding process includes drug, medical, and back ground checks, along with employment and education verification. The lab setting requires adherence to a professional dress code.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $17.00 - $17.00/hr.
