What we want

The Assistant Research Scientist conducts innovative research utilizing advanced fluorescence microscopy techniques to quantify synapse loss or the formation of new synapses in models of brain aging, Alzheimer's disease, tauopathy, and traumatic brain injury, with or without specific therapeutic interventions. Includes preparing cell cultures of neurons and glial cells, as well as brain tissue sections, using dual or triple immunofluorescence and super-resolution methods to localize pre- and post-synaptic proteins, peptides and small RNAs. Performs biochemical and molecular biological assays, collecting and analyzing data, interpreting results, and writing manuscripts for publication.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

  • Appropriate PhD and relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. degree with four-year research experience as a postdoctoral fellow

  • Experience in preparing mouse tissues sections for dual/triple fluorescence imaging

  • Experience in preparing human cultured cells for fluorescence imaging

  • Experience in generating extracellular vesicles from stem cells and fluorescence imaging vesicles for single molecules

  • Experience with Image J analysis of fluorescence images

  • Experience in laboratory maintenance, equipment and ordering supplies

  • Extensive expertise in fluorescence and confocal microscopic techniques

  • Significant experience using single molecule fluorescence

  • Advanced fluorescence imaging techniques

  • Biochemical and molecular biological assays

  • Knowledge of computers and computer software related to the position

Responsibilities

Research

  • Performs advanced fluorescence microscopy techniques to quantify synapse loss or the formation of new synapses in models of brain aging, Alzheimer's disease, tauopathy, and traumatic brain injury, with or without specific therapeutic interventions

  • Prepares cell cultures of neurons and glial cells, as well as brain tissue sections

  • Performs biochemical and molecular biological assays

  • Generates, tests and evaluates reagents necessary for novel assays

Data Analysis

  • Collects, analyzes, interprets data from fluorescence imaging studies using appropriate statistical methods

  • Prepares manuscripts for publication

  • Assists in preparing research proposals and progress reports

Mentorship

  • Mentors undergraduate and graduate students in their research
