Laboratory Technician - Additive Manufacturing

GENERAL PURPOSE:
The Laboratory Technician – Additive Manufacturing provides technical assistance for new application development, new product development, and technical support in powder-based 3D printing (additive manufacturing) and industrial powder activities. Additionally, provide technical assistance for filter bag investigation of fiber-based products and analytical testing.

This position is responsible for 3D printing operations, powder processing and handling, machine maintenance, and lab safety. Work closely with application engineers to provide printing jobs including: printing preparation, parts inspection, and post processing; all in accordance with appropriate laboratory and safety guidelines. Work closely with fibers team to provide analysis of fiber products (e.g., fiber, felt, filter bags). Perform analytical test methods on a variety of materials.

This position will also participate in laboratory investigations, equipment evaluations and qualifications, and quality improvement initiatives. The role includes assisting in the preparation and maintenance of standard operating procedure (SOP), hazard review, setting up equipment, performing equipment maintenance and calibration, safeguarding materials and printing and testing records, and performing all the above in a safe manner.

• Associate Degree in Material Science, Engineering, Engineering Technology, or equivalent experience
• 2-4 years of 3D printing experience
• Experience with powder handling and working with hazardous materials/chemicals
• Demonstrated ability to follow procedures (SOP, ISO, ASTM)
• Ability to interpret and evaluate processing and testing procedures and solve problems
• Demonstrated ability in method development
• Computer literate in Microsoft Office 365 applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, SharePoint, Teams)
• Strong organizational and communication skills
• Ability to lift 50 lb without assistance
• Ability to wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
• Ability to climb stairs
• Ability to work overtime if needed

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Preparation, Processing, Testing, and Reporting:
• Operation of primarily powder-based 3D printing equipment. Occasional operation of other types of 3D printing.
• Assist the additive manufacturing team with various tasks in the printing workflow including setting up builds, post-processing parts, and maintaining printers between builds
• Operation of polymer processing machines to produce powders for various applications (e.g., mixing, sieving, blending)
• Post-processing for 3D printed parts (e.g., sand blasting, media tumbling)
• Build validation (e.g., product and technology validation)
• Ensure all printing and powder processing labs are kept clean and functional. Maintain general cleanliness of overall equipment and surrounding areas.
• Regular use of CADing software
• Coordinate internal and external processing and testing needs primarily for 3D printing activities
• Fiber and filter bag analysis (e.g., microscopy, permeability, dust analysis, sample prep for mechanical testing)
• Perform analytical techniques involving wet chemistry (e.g., viscosity, chemical resistance).
• Accurately perform all technical procedures within area of responsibility
• Maintain physical and digital inventory systems, preparation of outbound shipments, and handling of inbound shipments
• Ability to multi-task and handle multiple jobs throughout the day
• Knowledgeable and proficient at the use of laboratory data management systems, maintaining logbooks and test records
• Interpret and follow material testing standards (ISO, ASTM, internal) and follow safety data sheets (SDS)
• Document writer and reviewer for laboratory procedures and reports
• Understand the prioritization of lab tasks and reprioritization as appropriate
• Support maintenance, modifications, improvements, troubleshooting and repairs of equipment
• Coordinate specific projects or activities as requested by direct supervisor or the Director of Innovation Management

• Adhere to all ESHS programs, policies, & procedures

• Have the appropriate knowledge and tools prior to performing a task
• Complete all required ESHS training and remain current with applicable learning plans at all times
• Report all injuries to ESHS and supervision within the same shift of the incident occurring
• Inform direct supervision of any ESHS hazards or concerns in the workplace
• Provide feedback and coaching to coworkers on both safe and unsafe behaviors and conditions
• Actively participate in the ESHS management system as directed by supervision
