Job Description
As a Specimen Processing Technician I (SPT I), you'll provide essential support within the Specimen Processing Department. This role requires a strong data entry background and excellent organizational skills. You'll be responsible for a variety of tasks, including specimen sorting, racking, centrifugation, aliquoting, and the timely pickup and delivery of processed specimens to the laboratory. Your ability to accurately identify and resolve issues with specimen types and information, coupled with a commitment to quality and compliance, will be key to your success in this fast-paced production environment.

responsibilities:
- Perform general support functions within the Specimen Processing Department, including A-station, presort, pickup and delivery of processed specimens to the laboratory, imaging/microfilming, centrifugation, and aliquoting.
- Execute all functions with confidence, accuracy, and in a timely manner.
- Organize and manage complex tasks, demonstrating a strong understanding of specimen types related to ordered tests.
- Identify and resolve problems with specimen types, missing information, and other issues during sorting, racking, centrifuging, delivery, and storage.
- Research test order information on translation tables, computer systems, and the directory of services to ensure compliance.
- Meet quality and production standards within six months of completing training.
- Complete all required written documentation legibly, understandably, and within assigned timeframes.
- Adhere to attendance guidelines and report to work on time, supporting department performance during coworker absences.
- Learn additional functions within Tech Operations and Specimen Processing to facilitate career progression.
- Handle multiple tasks simultaneously while maintaining composure under pressure.
- Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with all levels of staff.
- Exercise good judgment in problem-solving and decision-making.
- Adhere to core values, safety, compliance, and work process policies and procedures.
- Maintain a neat and clean work area, complying with 5S workplace standards.
- Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, fostering a positive working environment.

- Clinical department requirements with regard to specimen types and quantity needed for each test, specimen handling and delivery.
- Understanding of compliance regulations related to test ordering which may change on a daily basis.
- Flexibility and a willingness to adapt to change and pursuit of continuous improvement.
- Commitment to fulfilling internal and external customer requirements in the course of carrying out routine position responsibilities.
- Willingness to actively contribute to a team based working environment.
- Ability and willingness to support the goals of the department with regard to staffing needs on weekends, holidays, on call and overtime.
- Tasks and responsibilities must be performed with confidence, accuracy and in a timely manner.
- Performance task proficiency includes but is not limited to the following manual functions:- sorting- racking- pickup and delivery of specimens to the laboratory- specimen storage [this position might also be trained to run the sorters in archive mode]- centrifugation- aliquoting.
qualifications:
Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Basic understanding of computers required. Preferred knowledge includes laboratory testing and/or laboratory specimen processing, and medical terminology applicable to a clinical laboratory.
- No experience required, but previous laboratory experience (especially in a hospital laboratory) or experience in a production environment is preferred.
- Proficient in data entry.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Ability to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods and lift up to 50 lbs.
- Capable of maneuvering large carts and/or racks with specimens.
- Flexibility and willingness to adapt to change and pursue continuous improvement.
- Commitment to fulfilling internal and external customer requirements.
