Job DescriptionWe are seeking a detail-oriented and analytical Laboratory Technician - Level 2 to join our team in Sidney, Canada. The Laboratory Technician is accountable, as part of a team, for providing organic clean glassware
for Environmental Analytical Chemists, maintaining sufficient quantities of consumable supplies
throughout the lab, removal of waste and recyclables within the lab, and providing assistance in
support of analytical work, ensuring efficient productivity.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Specific to work within the Wash-up group:
Maintain the flow of cleaned supplies to meet production requirements by submitting used glassware to wash-up from laboratories on a regular basis.
Wash, bake and store glassware.
Participate in spike witness program.
Take a physical inventory of glassware; and
Ensure Eye Wash and Emergency Shower stations and spill kit supplies are kept in a clean and ready-to-use state.
Specific to work within the Tech group:
Stock approved solvents in the solvent shed.
Report temperatures of lab equipment (fridge, freezer, & moisture oven, daily);
Remove powders for muffle oven (trailer).
Process consumed jars remove labels, scan & save hardcopies.
Cut copper foil for lab use.
Clean field sampling containers using procedures supplied by the client.
Maintain an adequate level of lab supplies and glassware.
Baking of some consumable lab supplies including, but not limited to, pipettes, c-tubes, u-vials,
ECD vials, ampoules, GFA/GFF filters, anti-bumping granules and sodium sulphate.
Remove recyclables throughout the lab.
Remove waste solvents from the lab and maintaining disposal records.
Solvent rinse glassware, specific to analysis, for analyst use.
Basic maintenance of lab equipment.
Prepare mixed reagents proactively and as required.
Participate in spike witness program.
Maintain adequate solvent storage levels within the tech aisle, and lab if possible.
Specific to work within the Sample Receiving:
Track incoming sample shipments and point person to facilitate any potential problems with
customs and/or couriers.
Receive all client samples, documenting condition upon receipt.
Create receiving records in LIMS.
Log samples into our LIMS system assigning products and information based on matrix,
requested method(s), and client specific instructions.
Pre-treat samples based on matrix and method requirements.
Pre-treats include but are not limited to:
acidifying aqueous samples using H2SO4.
testing PH and for presence of Chlorine.
Quenching aqueous samples with Sodium thiosulfate if positive for free
Chlorine
Adding Sodium azide to aqueous samples.
transferring samples to appropriate containers for freezing.
Maintaining an accurate and complete inventory of all Samples on site at SGS AXYS.
Storing samples appropriately based on matrix, required method and hold times.
Pulling samples requested by lab, from storage and delivering to the lab daily for analysis.
Ensure Chain of Custody between Sample receiving and all the lab is accurate and up to
date.
Maintain accurate and complete paperwork within the sample receiving group.
Maintain accurate inventory of calibrated thermometers, updating LIMS with current
calibration certificates.
Pull samples, extracts and ampoules that have been requested to be shipped out to clients.
Assist Shipping department with preparing client shipments of equipment, supplies etc...
A Lab Technician II may also be required to complete other tasks in support of chemists in the lab, including but not limited to:
Autoclave Agricultural Biohazard waste and aqueous samples.
Check balance calibration.
Assemble caps and septum until jar is full.
Top up spill kit if used (monthly check).
Dispose of aqueous samples.
Drum disposal of soils after autoclaving, label drums, record in LIMS.
Separate DCM from waters; and
Separate XAD from waters.
Advanced Duties and Responsibilities may include:
Completing and updating of all paperwork, forms, WUS, or LIMS as required (ex. turning of soxhlets, weighing moistures, sealing ampoules, etc.).
Activating copper foil, and copper powder as required.
Collect glassware proofs.
Transfer sample extracts.
Rotovaping samples.
Assisting other Lab staff with sealing ampoules, weighing moistures, and removing and
properly disposing of Biohazards materials.
Sealing ampoules.
Weighing moistures and completing data entry.
Sample disposal & preserving consumed sample labels.
Label and prep microvials.
Preparing and packing columns for chromatographic clean-up of sample extracts
Carbon celite preparation.
Dispensing and ampouling standard solutions.
Homogenizing Tissue samples using the grinder, vertice, fillet knives and/or scissors.
Homogenizing Solids (biohazardous, Agricultural Hazards and non-Hazardous).
Sub sampling samples for moisture analysis.
Collect and process in house QC proofs.
Write batches for proofing using the LIMS system.
Clean sampling media following Standard operating procedures, for client use.
Prepare Sampling media for shipment to clients. (ex. XAD columns, filters etc)
Processing of High-Volume water samples in preparation for extraction.
Maintaining accurate and complete paperwork within the sample Preparation Group.
Education: High school
Experience: 1 3 years experience in a laboratory setting
Salary: $20 per hour
