Research Scientist, Assistant Professor

The University of Utah Health Sciences is seeking a Research Scientist at the rank of Assistant Professor (Career Track) to join the Division of Transplantation Surgery. This career-track faculty position offers a unique opportunity to lead innovative research within the Division of Transplantation Surgery. The successful candidate will collaborate with the Department of Surgerys LabCore and the Huntsman Cancer Institute Laboratories, as part of a NCI -designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, to advance science in transplantation and hepatobiliary disease.

The division is a highly cohesive team of abdominal transplant surgeons and advanced practice clinicians committed to delivering high-quality, value-driven patient care, advancing education, and driving innovation through basic science, clinical, and health services research. Faculty also play a central role in caring for patients with benign and malignant hepatic and biliary diseases in partnership with the Huntsman Cancer Institute.

Key Responsibilities:

Conduct independent, high-impact research in transplantation immunology and molecular biology

Collaborate with multidisciplinary investigators including chemists, biologists, and clinicians

Interface with faculty across transplantation, hepatobiliary surgery, oncological sciences, and molecular biology

Lead and mentor a small research team (e.g., research assistants, medical students)

Pursue and secure extramural funding to support research initiatives

Mentor trainees at all levels (e.g., undergraduate students, medical students, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows)

Contribute to the divisions strategic vision and academic mission

Required Qualifications:
Ph.D. in biological sciences, immunology, molecular biology, or a related field

Demonstrated research interest in transplantation-related immunology and molecular biology

Ability to collaborate across diverse scientific disciplines

Strong aptitude for independent research and team leadership

Commitment to mentoring and academic excellence

Preferred Qualifications:

Robust publication record in peer-reviewed journals

Prior experience in an academic medical center or research-intensive environments

Effective leadership in multidisciplinary environments

Strategic vision aligned with departmental missions in education, research, clinical care, and service

Ability to foster collaboration, quality, and efficiency across teams

Experience working across departments such as Internal Medicine, Radiology, and Anesthesia
