Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), Simons Collaboration on Ocean Processes and Ecology (SCOPE), and the Hawaii Ocean Time-Series (HOT) program, located in Honolulu, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE: $6,000 - $9,000/Mon.

DUTIES: Works with sea-going and scientific research staff in the collection, processing and interpretation of in-situ oceanographic data. Participates in oceanographic research cruises as part of the Hawaii Ocean Time-series (HOT) program. Periodically acts as Chief Scientist on HOT cruises during which is responsible for the planning and execution of all scientific operations during the cruise. Oversees biogeochemical analyses using standard protocols, including helping to improve methods when applicable. Assists in the maintenance of laboratories at the University of Hawaii (UH) Manoa and at the UH Marine Center. Drives to project sites as needed. Prepares data and written reports of work performed. Assists with regular maintenance of laboratory and field equipment at University of Hawaii at Manoa and at the University of Hawaii Marine Center. Maintains instrumentation used for assigned analyses and troubleshoots malfunctioning instrumentation.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: Master's Degree from an accredited college or university in Biology, Chemistry, or Oceanography (Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university with three to five (3-5) years of experience in an oceanographic laboratory will substitute for a Master's Degree).

EXPERIENCE: One to three (1-3) years of field or laboratory research experience in an oceanographic or related research program. At least two (2) years of experience in biological oceanographic sampling and field research, including operating and maintaining oceanographic field instruments and sampling equipment. At least one (1) year of experience with laboratory analyses of dissolved nutrients and particulate matter concentrations.

KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge of basic laboratory equipment and procedures. Knowledge of proper use and handling of radioisotopes for biological oceanographic rate measurements. Understanding of oceanographic sampling techniques, including conducting in situ incubations and shipboard sampling procedures.

ABILITIES & SKILLS: Ability to conduct biogeochemical experiments and oceanographic sampling while aboard research vessels. Computer literacy, including database management, word processing, and Internet search engines. Ability to prepare written reports. Must be willing to work with chemicals and radioisotopes (H-3, C-14, P-32) following established safety guidelines. Must possess a valid driver's license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver's insurance equivalent to Hawaii's No-Fault Driver's Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must complete EHSO's Lab Safety, Hazardous Waste, Biosafety and Radiation Safety training immediately after hire, or no later than employee's initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. Must be able to complete the UH Information Security Awareness Training (ISAT) within two (2) weeks from date of hire, and re-certify every twelve (12) months.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS: Able to lift and carry up to twenty (20) kilograms (approximately 44 pounds).

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience with analyses of seawater nutrients (organic and inorganic) and particulate matter concentrations. Working knowledge of instrumentation such as fluorometers, spectrophotometers, gas chromatographs, and liquid scintillation counters.
