The Opportunity
McElhanney is seeking an experienced and motivated Environmental Biologist to join our Langley, BC office. The successful candidate will be a member of our environmental team with the ability to draw on support from over 45 environmental professionals across the company. In this role, you will have the opportunity to work on a variety of projects in our three market sectors: cities and communities, energy and resources, and transportation and transit.
As a seasoned professional, your experience and expertise will influence the execution of projects and the coordination of project-related tasks which may include: field-descriptions of ecosystems and their components, habitat suitability and capability assessments, fish and riparian area assessments, synthesis of data into reports, and masterful interpretation and application of environmental statues including but not limited to the Water Sustainability Act, Fisheries Act, Species at Risk Act and Riparian Areas Protection Regulation.
This is a casual position with variable hours, including the potential to work full-time hours depending on workload and business needs.

What You’ll Do
- All stages of environmental studies including proposal preparation, data collection, interpretation, and reporting.
- Provide environmental advice and solutions to guide design and assist with planning.
- Coordinating regulatory permitting for Approvals, Project Reviews, Authorizations, and Wildlife Salvages.
- Design and implement terrestrial and aquatic habitat mitigation and compensation measures.
- Mentor junior staff members of the environmental team.
- Coordinate subcontracting specialties as required.
- Coordinate or oversee Environmental Management and monitoring during project construction phases.
- Assist with Business development and delivery of work that results in repeat business.
- Understand, commit to and promote the McElhanney Quality Management System, ISO 9001, and all client quality, safety, and environmental management systems.
What You’ll Bring (Must Have)
- A passion to offer sustainable environmental solutions to your local community.
- 5-10+ years of experience with proposal preparation, aquatic, or terrestrial habitat assessments, permitting, and reporting.
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Ecological Restoration, or a related field.
- RPBio or RBTech in good standing.
- Proven report writing experience and strong communication abilities.
- Experience liaising with clients, First Nations, and government agencies.
- Possession of a valid BC driver’s license is required at the time of hire.
What You’ll Bring (Nice to Have)
- Local knowledge of the Lower Mainland and municipal land development criteria is an asset.
- Specialization in fisheries/aquatic sciences is an asset.
- Electrofishing certification and/or CPESC is an asset.
- Proficiency with GIS, ArcMap, mobile data collection, and/or data management is an asset.
What Can We Offer You?
The wage range for this position is $41.00 - $61.00 per hour. McElhanney offers fair compensation that is commensurate with the individual’s education, experience, skills, and professional qualifications. The posted base wage is representative of the required level of qualifications and experience for the position as noted in the job posting. The wage offered will be based on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.
