LABORATORY TECH ASSISTANT 3 New Orleans, Louisiana, United States Staff- Classified Academic Affairs Add to favorites View favorites Opening date: May 6, 2026 Closing Date: May 20 ,2026 Title: LABORATORY TECHNICAL ASSISTANT 1, 2 or 3 Employee Classification: LABORATORY TECHNICAL ASSISTANT 3 Department: Animal Laboratories-Downtown Campus Location: ANIMAL CARE/CLINICAL SCIENCES Job Summary/Basic Functions The experienced incumbent will be responsible for basic and specialized animal husbandry duties for a large variety of research animals maintained and housed within the Division of Animal Care. The Facility Manager, Clinical Veterinarian, Laboratory Technical Assistant Supervisor, and Laboratory Technician Supervisor will provide supervision for this position. The position will require weekend and holiday duties. Other Information About the Position LSU Health New Orleans Division of Animal Care is seeking motivated individuals for the position of Laboratory Technical Assistant 1 or 2. There are multiple vacancies. This position is part of a Career Progression Group (CPG) . As part of a Career Progression Group, vacancies may be filled from this recruitment as a (Laboratory Technical Assistant 1, 2 or 3) depending on the level of experience of the selected applicant(s). There is a Special Entrance Rate for these positions. Job Duties: Perform specialized maintenance or animal husbandry duties in biosafety level 1, 2, 3 areas. Independently maintain husbandry and sanitation of animal satellite housing facility exceeding regulatory requirements. Visually inspect and monitor the health status of research animals and report abnormalities to the veterinarian. Record animal behavior, fecal and urine output, and food and water intake. Identify and report subtle signs of illness in all laboratory animals. Operate large, specializes autoclave equipment to ensure proper sanitation and disinfection of materials used in the facility. Perform cage changing in specialized behavioral areas in weekends. Cross train for all areas in the facility to provide husbandry as needed. Maintain weekly animal and feed inventory. Maintain daily monitoring logs of animal environment. There are some special requirements to this position: All new hires will be required to participate in the Division of Animal Care Occupational Health Program mandated by Federal Law. New Hires will complete a Risk Assessment Evaluation/Review Form, and will be scheduled for the following: Physical, Blood work which includes: Complete blood count, and blood chemistry profile, and measles titer tuberculosis testing. New Hires may also be scheduled for the following: 1. Toxoplasmosis Testing (women) 2. Tetanus/Diphtheria Immunization 3. Diphtheria/Pertussis/Tetanus (DTP) Immunization 4. Measles, mumps, rubella Vaccine Compensation: Starting rate of pay for the LTA 1 is $12 and $12.84 for the LTA 2. Payrate is dependent upon applicants' level of experience. There is an additional $3 Premium Pay and $1 Longevity Pay per hour for hours worked only. Minimum Qualifications Required Education: None Number of years required to perform the job: 0 for LTA 1, 1 for LTA 2, 2 for LTA 3 Type of experience required to perform the job: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Two years of experience as a phlebotomist, EKG/ECG technician, pulmonary technician, or respiratory care technician, or in the care, preparation or handling of laboratory specimens, animals, or cadavers; OR An associate's degree in medical technology, nursing, clinical laboratory science, or a biological, physical, or chemical science; OR Certification as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science. Substitution: Every six semester hours earned from an accredited college or university in any of the biological, physical, chemical, or agricultural sciences will substitute for one year of the required experience.
