The College of Science is seeking an Associate Director of Research Development. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE ), 12-month, professional faculty position.
The Associate Director of Research Development ( ADRD ) in the College of Science ( COS ) is a strategic leadership role reporting to the Executive Associate Dean ( EAD ), that supports the acceleration of the College of Sciences growth in large scale, externally funded research. The incumbent in this position strategizes the development of high impact, multi- investigator proposals, supports competitive and diverse research teams, and advances institutional positioning for major federal, foundation, and industry funding opportunities. The ADRD plays a critical role in helping the College expand its portfolio in basic and fundamental research, interdisciplinary, AI enabled, and large-scale collaborative and transdisciplinary research, coordinating strategy and competitive positioning and providing high-level and equitable proposal development leadership.

The College has seven departments across the mathematical, physical and biological sciences: Biochemistry and Biophysics, Chemistry, Integrative Biology, Mathematics, Microbiology, Physics, and Statistics. Key Responsibilities:
The ADRD will provide strategic leadership and hands-on support for proposal support services in COS for the development of small to large-scale, complex, and collaborative research proposals that advance the College of Sciences research priorities. The position focuses on the College and includes developing center-level initiatives, and multi-investigator funding opportunities, working in partnership with faculty leaders, College leadership, and central research offices to strengthen competitiveness for major external funding. The ADRD will lead and direct the proposal support services coordinators to coordinate small and large, complex grant submissions, collaborate in developing research advancement strategies and liaise with central research offices. This role provides College level strategic leadership that complements central research office functions by enabling closer alignment with faculty research programs, facilitating team formation, and positioning proposals for competitive advantage.
The position duties are:
45 % Lead Proposal Support Services in the College of Science
The ADRD leads the proposal support services coordinators to provide outstanding proposal development support for faculty, staff and students in the COS . The ADRD provides leadership, mentoring and direction for assigned proposal support services staff. The ADRD plans, assigns and reviews work, and establishes goals and professional development for each supervised position. As needed, the ADRD disciplines direct reports and addresses grievances, developing a framework for corrective actions as necessary.

- Supervise the proposal support coordinators who assist faculty in proposal development and submission and manage the College of Sciences pre-award and post-award support.
- Collaborate with the EAD on cost share requests for proposals.
- Serve as the primary proposal record authorizer for the College in the Beaver Research Hub.
- Collaborate with current COS large centers and institutes in the grant renewal process.
- Support and guide the development of proposals for large center funding, large training grants and other complex collaborative proposal development opportunities.
- Build/support teams to compete for large center-type proposals. Advise proposal development and submission for large, complex grants and cooperative agreements (e.g. the NSF Physics Frontier Center, the NASA Oregon Space Grant Consortium and the NIH GCE4ALL Center).
- Represent the College on the CARE team of proposal support services leads in all colleges at OSU .
- Oversee the development and organization of programs and workshops for proposal support training such as the NSF CAREER program, Foundation training programs, among others.
- Advise faculty on competitive positioning, funding strategy, and proposal architecture for high impact submissions.
- Organize new faculty orientation for proposal development.
20% Research and Data Administrative Infrastructure
- Work with the EAD in developing policies around timely proposal submissions, proper use of cost matches, among others.
- Work with the proposal support services team to assess and evaluate the proposal submission process, provide data analytics, metrics for research, and look for trends and potential areas for growth.
- Facilitate post award support for faculty with large or complex research portfolios.
- Collaborate and Coordinate with college and central research support services; develop proposal tools, templates, and best practices.
20% Research Advancement
- Support the EAD in managing seed funding programs, internal and external to the COS at OSU , including the SciRIS program, and programs at OSU that require College matches such as the Research Advancement Academy, Transdisciplinary Research Funding, Research Equipment Reserve Fund, among other programs
- Support the EAD in facilitating networking, convening research interest groups, and building, cross-disciplinary teams including for industry relations and economic development initiatives (e.g., semiconductor related), AI and research computing (e.g., DOE Genesis Mission).
10% Strategic Planning
- Collaborate with the EAD and the Colleges Research Development Unit in strategic planning to grow our research enterprise, including identifying funding opportunities, acting as a liaison with funding agencies, and managing limited submission programs.
- Collaborate to elevate the research profile of faculty and institutions through networking and targeted communications.
- Explore avenues to increase faculty to apply for COS / OSU seed funding programs and/or engage industry in collaborative research.
- Lead the writing of research reports for proposal support services and participate in updating relevant websites.
5% Service and Other Duties as Assigned
The ADRD serves on College and University committees as requested and agreed upon with the EAD . The ADRD maintains active membership in appropriate professional associations and participates in professional activities as requested and agreed upon with the EAD .
What You Will Need:
- Masters degree in a STEM , business administration or related field with two or more years of transferrable experience in research and proposal development OR Bachelors degree in a STEM , business administration or related field with five or more years of transferrable experience in research and proposal development.
- Familiarity with federal funding agencies.
- Experience supporting large, complex, or collaborative research proposals.
- Demonstrated ability to lead a team in effective collaboration.
- Experience in data analytics (metrics, charts, graphs), creating databases, and reporting outcomes
- Ability to communicate effectively and professionally both in written work and in speaking.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and impartiality.
- Expertise in using software packages, such as Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat.
- Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion including a commitment to educational equity.

- Two or more years of experience in higher education proposal support and research development.
- Demonstrated experience in supporting the development of proposals for large center or institute grants.
- Demonstrated experience in developing and organizing professional development training for proposal development.
- Familiarity with content management systems ( CMS ), for example Drupal or Wordpress
- Experience with institutional reporting systems (such as CORE or Banner or Data warehouse)
- Experience with InfoReady and/or an Electronic Research Administration system like Cayuse or the Beaver Research Hub.
- Experience in management and / or supervisory experience.
