NEW Solutions connects experienced workers (ages 55+) with the USDA AgriculturalResearch Service (ARS). These experienced professionals provide administrative,scientific, and technical support to the Agricultural Research Service throughthe Experienced Worker Program (EWP).

The enrollment relationship between NEW Solutions and the Enrollee isan ?at-will? relationship. Qualifications:

Minimum of 4 year(s) of experience in Invertebrate Physiology. OR BA/BS Degreein Chemistry, Biology, Agriculture, Marine Sciences, Environmental Science,Genetics, Biotechnology.

Familiar with flow-through seawater facility, experience maintaininglaboratory supply inventory, chemical inventory, and purchasing.Experience required with Windows, MS Word, MS ExcelDuties:

Enrollee works as a lab tech under the supervision of a senior scientist. TheNational Cold Water Marine Aquaculture Center in Kingston, RI is seeking amotivated individual to provide technical support for research aimed atdeveloping phenotyping strategies and biomarkers for commercially importanttraits in eastern oyster. The position involves maintenance of flowthroughseawater systems, animal care, and performing laboratory assays that quantifyphysiological processes. The enrollee shall not sign federal documents,authorize the use of federal funds, nor initiate or conduct federally fundedresearch projects. The enrollee shall not author articles for publication as afederal employee, nor coordinate scientific research between the Government andprivate industry. The enrollee shall not present themselves as a Governmentemployee or Government representative at meetings both foreign and domestic orwhen coordinating federal agencies? areas of research. Assists in one or more phases of the research process by performing avariety of technical duties, in a laboratory, field, or greenhouse environment,common to the assigned area of work. 20%Keeps detailed records of experimental data. Tabulates, statisticallyanalyzes and summarizes data using personal computers and softwarepackages. 20%Maintains inventory of chemicals, prepares solutions, orders reagents foruse in the laboratory, field, or greenhouse, and safely disposes of wastematerial (both chemical and biological). 20%Maintains, calibrates, and modifies equipment and automated systems used fortest and evaluation procedures. 20%Collects, prepares, evaluates, and verifies samples and supporting records;maintains records and locates and compiles data and other information fromvarious sources. 20%

Other:Training provided as needed.Travel Requirements: Travel as required for specimen collection. Overnighttravel potentially a few nights per year.Overnight travel: Potentially a few nights per year.Health and Safety Considerations: Basic laboratory safety training providedthrough the University of Rhode Island. Incumbent will attend online training,take assessment, and obtain safety certification prior to working in laboratoryenvironments.Required Safety Gear: The Safety and Occupational Health Specialist willidentify safety equipment needs on the first day in the workplace.Physical requirements: Occasionally lifting 30-40 lb containers of filteredwater.
