(SSE) is seeking a Histologist to provide support with biology and chemistry efforts related to toxicological research. You will be working in support of SSE's contract with the USEPA's Laboratory in Duluth, MN. Job location is at EPA Laboratory. Primary Duties : You will operate a research histology laboratory capable of supporting toxicological research teams involved in developing the protocols used by the EPA and other regulatory authorities for chemical regulation and registration. You will also be involved with teams working to develop effective and efficient methods to evaluate adverse chemical effects on aquatic organisms. With guidance from the program manager, your duties will include the following activities: Management of a histotechnical preparation laboratory, including maintenance and procurement of chemicals and other laboratory consumables, and perform routine calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting on laboratory instruments like microtomes, tissue processors, and automated stainers. Developing techniques for performing necropsies, trimming specimens and tissues as required, and processing specimens for statistically valid sampling for chemical treatment effects. Systematically employ the microtome to effectively sample, mount, and stain sections from whole organisms, excised tissues, and cells. Apply and evaluate routine and specialized stains for evaluating tissues from aquatic organisms, mounted on glass slides. Evaluate and record tissue and organ development in lower vertebrates as well as normal and abnormal histology relative to chemical treatments. Apply high-resolution microscopy and imaging methods, including image analysis software for the morphometric evaluation of treatment-related effects of tissues on prepared slides. Use electronic laboratory databases to ensure proper QA/QC procedures for histology laboratories. Provide technical support to research teams in the development and implementation of toxicity tests, including molecular biology assays such as genotyping and qPCR, working with CRISPR, performing in-vitro/in-vivo assays, and sanger sequencing. Attend scientific conferences and present research on new technologies and methods for evaluating chemical effects on aquatic organisms, and to co-author research articles. Qualifications/Skills : Experience working in a histotechnical preparation laboratory, including proper tissue fixation methods, tissue processing, embedment, microtomy, tissue staining methods, and high-resolution microscopic imaging techniques. Experience supporting toxicological research projects, collecting and processing biological samples. Multidisciplinary interest in both biology and chemistry. A passion to participate in research that supports the EPA lab's focus on freshwater ecotoxicity and freshwater coastal ecology. Education/Experience Requirement : Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology or related field plus 2 years of experience or Master's degree plus 1 year of experience. Special Requirements/Certifications: Must pass corporate and federal background checks. Must have valid driver's license.
