Summary Overview

The Research Scientist I, reporting to the Director of Upstream Process Development, will support the Process Development team by identifying, evaluating, and implementing new and existing technologies to improve process efficiency, control, and understanding. This role involves developing scalable AAV vector manufacturing processes using AskBio's proprietary Pro10 cell line. This role also involves designing and executing experiments for preclinical and clinical programs, applying Quality by Design (QbD) principles to generate high-quality datasets.

This position will be based at AskBio's headquarters facility in Research Triangle Park (Durham), North Carolina.

Job Responsibilities

  • Develop scalable AAV vector manufacturing methods using AskBio's proprietary Pro10 cell line
  • Independently design and execute flask and bioreactor experiments in support of preclinical and clinical programs using QbD principles
  • Generate and interpret data independently, to efficiently deliver high quality data sets supporting platform and preclinical pipelines.
  • In collaboration with senior leads contribute to CMC strategy and project plans.
  • Provide technical expertise and critical thinking to effectively operate in cross functional teams supporting delivery of R&D pipeline
  • Supervising junior staff, advising on lab work as appropriate.
  • Contribute to tech transfer documents and summary reports.
  • Author CMC regulatory documents as required.
  • Review and communicate experimental results both orally and in written reports/presentations to colleagues and management.
  • Collaborate with vendors and evaluate media and feed formulations to optimize AAV productivity.
  • Identify CapEx needs.
  • Identify, evaluate, and implement new and existing technologies to improve process efficiency, control, and understanding

Minimum Requirements

  • Biology/Biochemistry/Chemistry/Chemical Engineering or equivalent with an MS degree and 6+ years of experience or PhD with 0-2 years of experience
  • Previous experience with bench-top and/or mini-bioreactor formats required
  • Demonstrable knowledge of bioreactor theory and scale-up approaches
  • Statistical software experience (JMP, Minitab, etc.) preferred
  • Previous viral vector and/or AAV experience a plus
  • Understanding of QbD principles and application preferred
