Job Description

The Biologics Discovery Sciences Group at AbbVie is seeking an accomplished scientist to contribute significantly to the conception, execution, and communication of antibody discovery strategies in a highly collaborative environment. The successful candidate will develop and execute research strategies to advance the discovery and development of therapeutic antibodies for AbbVie's core therapeutic areas. Key responsibilities include designing and executing in vitro display technologies for lead antibody identification and optimization. The candidate is also expected to generate internal and external collaborations to further program goals and drive antibody discovery programs within a multidisciplinary research group in a dynamic, fast-paced team setting.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Implement novel selection strategies and build industry-leading libraries for discovery and screening of therapeutic candidates.
  • Identify and solve technical problems independently; conceive and implement innovative research ideas.
  • Leverage expertise to develop and execute research for a detailed mechanistic understanding of therapeutic molecules' molecular pharmacology.
  • Provide project updates, analyses, and advice to cross-functional teams and senior management.
  • Present original work across departments and at scientific conferences; may author or co-author peer-reviewed scientific papers or patents.
  • Manage scientist(s), evaluate team performance, and ensure effective performance of the team.
  • Ensure consistency and quality of technical reports.
  • Engage with internal and external scientific leaders in collaborative research.
  • Serve as a biologics lead for cross-functional teams and contribute scientific insights into projects across various therapeutic areas; recognized as an expert in the discovery and engineering of therapeutic molecules.

Qualifications

  • PhD, MS, or BS degree in Biochemistry, Biochemical Engineering, or related disciplines with typically 4-6 (PhD), 10-12+ (MS), or 12-14+ (BS) years of experience.
  • Hands-on experience with in vitro antibody discovery display technologies (e.g., phage, yeast, mammalian).
  • Extensive experience and knowledge in antibody engineering and optimization, including humanization and Fc optimization.
  • Expertise in antibody and/or antibody fragment library design and construction.
  • Strong molecular biology skills.
  • Experience in displaying complex proteins (non-antibody-like) is preferred.
  • Familiarity with sequence analysis tools such as Geneious and PipeBio.
  • Experience with flow cytometry.
  • Ability to explore and develop new approaches to advance innovative in vitro discovery and screening technologies.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Team player with the capability to operate in a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary environment and across functional and therapeutic areas.
  • Adaptability to rapid changes in project priorities and timelines.
  • Recognition in the scientific community, evidenced by a record of peer-reviewed publications and patents, is preferred.
  • Highly developed leadership and managerial experience is preferred.
  • Strong ability to engage with internal and external scientific leaders in collaborative research.
