POSITION PURPOSE
As a member of our Core R&D Labs, you will make important research contributions that accelerate progress in protein design. These teams develop new research methods, collect experimental data, and help interpret results. These activities are performed in collaboration with other scientists at the Institute for Protein Design or its collaborators; they are not available for external contract work.

In this role, you can expect to:
  • Work with other Core R&D Lab members to accomplish research goals, including by establishing and nurturing productive relationships with research colleagues, students, administrators, and others at the UW and beyond.
  • Follow standard operating procedures and working guidelines and maintain databases and inventories; these will be specific to the Core R&D Lab you join (see below).
  • Assist with managing undergraduate research assistants.
  • Attend meetings and team-building events.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
    You will initially join one the Crystallography Core R&D Lab at the Institute for Protein Design.

    Crystallography Research Core: This team helps reveal atomic-level details of our designed proteins and peptides by performing x-ray crystallography.

    (40 %)
    - Crystallization plates setup using advanced and complex robotics
    - Optimization plans and setup trays using liquid handlers
    - Crystal plate screening
    - Operating crystal plate hotels and imaging systems
    - Crystal curation depending on sample and users need
    - Sample preparation for synchrotron shipment

    (40 %)
    - Computational techniques and crystallographic softwares
    - Understating the diffraction data
    - Soleving crystallographic structures
    - Refining and polishing structures to contribute in high impact publication
    - Preparing structures and associated files for Protein Data Bank deposition

    (10 %)
    - Organizing and maintaining wet lab
    - Maintaining robotics and liquid handlers

    (5%)
    Assist with managing undergraduate research assistants.

    (5%)
    Present scientific data, attend meetings and team building events.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
    Bachelor's Degree in biochemistry, molecular biology, or any other relevant field and one year of related experience, OR equivalent combination of education/experience.

    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
    - Wet lab experience in protein chemistry and/or computational biology
    - Strong communication and organization skills and great attention to detail.
    - Crystallographic experience

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
    - At least one year of full-time laboratory experience.
    - A willingness to acquire new skills and learn on the job.
    - Maintain timeline and discharge specific duties with perfection
