The Honolulu Board of Water Supply , Water Quality Division is hiring a Laboratory Technician II . This position, under the supervision of professional microbiologists, performs a wide variety of field and laboratory tasks and tests to assist the Water Microbiologists.
Duties include, but are not limited to the following:
- Collecting drinking water samples from designated sampling sites, employing sterile techniques as prescribed by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standards.
- Assisting in all phases of microbiological analyses of drinking water samples and independently completes certain phases.
- Decontaminating, cleaning and sterilizing all of the glassware used in the laboratory.
- Responding to consumer complaints regarding drinking water irregularities such as odd taste, odor, color, turbidity or suspected water-related illness.
- Assisting in maintaining lab data program and inputting and compiling data as directed.
- Operating a motor vehicle to perform field sample collection work.
- Performing other related duties.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
At time of application, you must be a citizen, national, or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENT :
Equivalent to graduation from high school, including or supplemented by some course work in science involving the application of laboratory procedures and techniques.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT :
Three (3) years of laboratory work experience in a chemical, biological, or microbiological laboratory.
The education requirement must be met at the time of application. Education obtained outside of the United States must be comparable to a degree earned at a regionally-accredited college/university in the United States. In order to receive credit for the education, a foreign credential evaluation (FCE) must be provided. - Knowledge of the techniques and equipment used in laboratory analysis.
- Knowledge of the operation and care of residual chlorine titrators, analytical balances, pH meters, autoclaves, biological incubators, conductivity meters, fluorometers, filtering devices, cameras, microscopes, residual chlorine kits, ovens, burners, and other laboratory apparatus.
- Knowledge of practices and procedures involved in recording, assembling, and compiling scientific observations and statistical data.
- Ability to make careful and accurate field tests and laboratory preparations.
- Ability to work closely with professional laboratory personnel and carry out assigned examinations and analyses independently.
- Ability to keep records of procedures, observations and results of field and laboratory tests.
- Ability to make field inspections and investigations in occasionally unpleasant surroundings.
LICENSE REQUIREMENT :
Possession of an appropriate valid driver's license, as required. The current vacancy requires a valid driver's license (automobile/Type 3), prior to appointment.
