Job Summary

We are seeking a Surgical Laboratory Technician III for our Safety Assessment site located in Reno, Nevada.

Responsible for surgical technical duties and intermediate surgical procedures.

Provide mentoring and training to staff.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform or assist in study related and colony surgical procedures.
  • Provide training in the operations of advanced surgical equipment to other surgical staff and veterinary staff).
  • Organize training opportunities for surgical and vet staff within the surgery department.
  • Schedule surgical staff as needed for surgical procedures or other department needs.
  • Provide mentoring and training to surgical staff and veterinary staff in surgical procedures and novel techniques.
  • Develop new or innovative surgical techniques as appropriate for research studies.
  • Provide training for minor surgical techniques to intermediate procedures and anesthesia course.
  • Perform technical duties and study related procedures as required under the direction of department supervisor and/or team leader.
  • Assist with the cleaning and maintenance of the surgical suites and support areas.
  • Assist in cleaning and maintenance of surgical instruments as well as preparation of surgical packs and equipment.
  • Assist in preparing anesthesia and clinical records.
  • Provide anesthesia support to non-surgical studies.
  • Perform weekly spore validation of autoclave.
  • Maintain equipment maintenance logs and make arrangements for equipment in need of calibration, validation, and/or repair.
  • Record keeping of Standard Operating procedures (SOP's) and Business Operating Procedures (BOP'S) driven procedures and associated documentation.
  • Able to evaluate animal concerns for vet request that are surgery specific
  • Assist in development of SOP's concerning surgical related topics.
  • Analyze and develop solutions to surgical problems.
  • Adhere to the federal regulations and surgical guidelines related to the care of laboratory animals including regulatory inspections.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications

  • Experience:3-5 years in a surgical setting required.4-6 years related experience in a laboratory animal setting required.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
  • Certification/Licensure: SRS certification from the Academy of Surgical Research or equivalent required.
  • Other: Knowledge of basic surgical equipment. Analytical math skills for dose prep and anesthetic procedures. Must be able to handle multiple tasks, detail oriented and have good organizational skills.
  • The pay range for this position starts at $31.00/hr. Please note that salaries vary within the range based on factors including, but not limited to, experience, skills, education, certifications, and location.
