Job Summary:

Performs all stat and routine analyses offered by the laboratory. Recognizes the interdependency of tests and has knowledge of physiological conditions affecting test results. Operates and maintain the laboratory equipment. Interprets quality control data and corrects errors following laboratory policies.

Job Requirements:

Education and Work Experience:

  • Bachelors Degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory science, microbiology, cell biology, biochemistry, biological sciences, chemical sciences or allied health technologies or equivalent: Required
  • General laboratory experience: Required
  • Hospital experience: Preferred

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Valid Clinical Laboratory Scientist license or Valid Clinical Microbiologist license or Valid Public Health Microbiologist license in state of employment: Required: Required
  • Current certification from American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent: Preferred
  • Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) or Clinical Microbiologist Scientist (MTE) or Public Health Microbiologist (PHM): Required

Essential Functions:

  • Follows positive patient identification policy. Demonstrates an awareness of the factors that influence test results including those factors that influence results for newborn (infant) to geriatric age patients. Performs and evaluates quality control according to the quality control policy of the laboratory to check accuracy and reproducibility of tests. Implements the out of control plan, taking corrective action and documenting corrective procedures. Accurately records and reports results utilizing manual requisitions and computer system.
  • Performs each test method in a quality oriented, professional manner having the skills required for implementing all standard laboratory procedures Including various microscopic, immunologic or bacteriologic assays and other tests/assays assigned. Exhibits knowledge of proper specimen collection, including patient preparation, labeling, handling, preservation or fixation, processing or preparation, transportation and storage of specimens. Performs preventative maintenance, troubleshooting and calibration procedures related to each test performed. Assists in preparing reagents and solutions, having a working knowledge of reagent stability and storage. Maintains adequate levels of reagents and supplies and follows universal precautions in the lab to ensure safety of self and others. Assures that work area is properly cleansed after each assay and that all soiled glassware, etc., is placed in proper containers according to hospital and laboratory policy.
  • Reviews and evaluates the validity and accuracy of test results in comparison to anticipated results indicated per procedure manual, recognizing the interdependency of tests, the physiological conditions affecting results, patient age and normal values, controls, linearity errors, instrument codes, delta checks and more. Follows policy for reporting panic values and correcting errors.
  • Assists in all sections of the laboratory as needed during times of unusual workloads. Assists in instruction and supervising of laboratory assistants and clerks, and may be assigned to direct the daily activities in the absence of the lead technologist for a department. Works and collaborates with other departments and disciplines (i.e. Pharmacy, Nursing, Providers, Infection Prevention) as needed.
  • Knows and follows the Employee Responsibility information regarding emergency situations including ability to react positively to power failure. Knows the correct handling of the refrigerator and freezer, and the correct handling of all microbiology instruments, etc. Follows Medi Alert procedure. Follows Fire emergency procedure. Follows procedures for Chemical spills and use of SDS sheets.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
